Professional dental hygiene appointments in Gdańsk

You want a beautiful smile that adds to your self-confidence and has a positive effect on your well-being? You need healthy teeth and gums. The secret to a good condition of your teeth lies in oral hygiene. If it is limited to brushing and flossing after meals, then it is not enough. Even the best toothbrush and special toothpastes will not remove some problems, such as discolorations or tartar, or manage to maintain an aesthetic smile.

Why take care of oral hygiene?

Regular dental hygiene appointments is the best way to avoid cavities, prevent gum disease and tooth decay, maintain proper chewing function, eliminate discomfort resulting from abnormal dentition, and avoid bad breath.

In addition, professional dental hygiene procedures:

  • Allow effective removal of tartar.
  • Protect against enamel demineralisation.
  • Prevent permanent discolorations.
  • Remove dental plaque, tartar, and bacteria that accumulate on the surface of teeth, gums, and tongue.

Your whole body depends on the condition of your oral cavity. Did you know that issues with teeth and gums include not only gum disease, periodontosis, or increased risk of enamel erosion, but also heart and kidney disease, higher risk of diabetes, and gastrointestinal disease?

Oral hygiene procedures at IWANEK Clinic

Professional dental hygiene appointment includes:

  • Scaling – a professional procedure used to remove plaque and tartar off dental crowns and/or from under the gums. It is performed with an ultrasonic or mechanical method.
  • Sanding – a hygiene procedure which complements scaling. It involves removing the accumulated residue and tartar remains off your teeth with a compressed stream of dental sand and water. The procedure is pain-free.
  • Polishing – applied at the finish of the hygiene procedure: after removal of tartar and dental residue. It consists in polishing the teeth with a special paste with polishing and cleaning properties. The result is smoothened out and lustrous teeth. In addition, the procedure minimises the risk of re-accumulation of tartar.
  • Fluoride treatment – involves covering dental crowns with a fluoride-containing preparation – varnish or gel – which reduces dental hypersensitivity, strengthens the enamel, prevents development of tooth decay, and protects against external factors. Dental varnishing is the last step of a professional dental hygiene appointment.

Dental prevention

If you want to maintain strong and healthy teeth and dental function, you cannot forget about prevention – not only at the dentist's office, but also at your own home. Oral hygiene should involve the following steps:

  • Tooth brushing – at least two times a day, 2 to 3 minutes each time. Brush your teeth with circular motions and do not forget to clean your tongue and palate. You should replace your toothbrush every three months.
  • Flossing – dental floss, intended for tooth cleaning, help clean out the spaces between your teeth.
  • Irrigator – this device forms a stream of water under pressure to remove bacterial plaque and food leftovers from awkward places out of reach of the traditional toothbrush. An irrigator cleans the spaces between your teeth, even the most unreachable ones, thoroughly. You will also notice marked improvement in your gums.
  • Fluoride mouthwash – it supports treatment of gum inflammation, freshen your breath, and (first and foremost) eliminate bacteria, preventing tooth decay.
  • Interdental brushes – perfect for people with wide interdental spaces. They complement daily tooth brushing. The brush cleans and maintains the teeth perfectly as it is able to remove dental plaque off awkward places in the oral cavity.

When should you attend a professional oral hygiene appointment?

The dental hygiene procedure needs to be done on a regular basis, regardless of the condition of your teeth. Patients are recommended to undergo a full dental hygiene procedure every 6 months or, if they are prone to formation of tartar or suffer from gum disease, even every 4 months. The final decision regarding the frequency of the appointments is made by the dentist.
