Orthodontic Treatment

What does the path to a healthy, beautiful smile look like?

The basic steps of orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment is a process that helps straighten teeth and improve your bite and the look of your smile. So that patients feel at ease and know what to expect, it is worth discussing each stage of treatment in detail. Below is a simple guide showing the successive steps - from the first visit to consolidating the results.
  • 1

    Orthodontic consultation

    First meeting and conversation

This is the first visit to the orthodontist. The doctor checks the condition of your teeth, their alignment and your bite. They also ask about your expectations and any problems, such as jaw pain or tooth wear. At the end you receive preliminary information about possible treatment, its duration and approximate cost.

    Orthodontic diagnostics

    Thorough examinations

At this stage the necessary examinations are performed, such as X-rays (computed tomography, cephalometry), a 3D scan, and photographs of the teeth and face. Thanks to these, the orthodontist can accurately assess bone structure, tooth position, facial proportions and potential limitations. This allows treatment to be planned well and problems to be avoided in the future.

    Individual treatment plan

    A plan tailored to you

Based on the examinations, the orthodontist prepares a treatment plan. It includes a description of the problem, the chosen method, treatment time, number of visits and exact costs. The patient also learns about other possible options, so they can make a decision calmly.

  • 4

    Fitting the orthodontic appliance

    Start of treatment

During this visit a fixed appliance is fitted, aligners are handed over or a removable appliance is adjusted - depending on the chosen method. The visit usually takes up to an hour. The patient receives instructions on hygiene, dietary recommendations and what to expect in the first days after the appliance is fitted.

  • 5

    Check-up visits

    Monitoring progress

Check-up visits take place regularly, usually every 4-8 weeks, and every 2.5 months in the case of aligners. The orthodontist checks progress, adjusts the appliance or replaces the aligners. If needed, they make small changes to the treatment plan so that the result is as good and safe as possible.

    Removing the appliance

    A straight smile

After the active phase of treatment is complete, the appliance is removed. It is a special moment that patients wait for impatiently! The teeth are thoroughly cleaned and the doctor shows the final result. It is a very pleasant moment, but the treatment is not quite over yet.

  • 7

    Retention - consolidating the results

    Keeping your teeth straight

After the appliance is removed, the teeth may try to return to their old position. That is why retention is necessary, e.g. special aligners or a thin wire bonded to the inside of the teeth. The orthodontist chooses the best option and explains how to use it. It is a very important stage that preserves the results of treatment for many years.

Children's Orthodontics 🦷

A child's first visit to the orthodontist should take place between the ages of 7 and 10, when baby teeth are being replaced by permanent ones. It is a strategic window of development: the child's jaw bones are still growing intensively, which allows the doctor to shape their proper development rather than merely move teeth. Early detection of a bite defect in a young patient often makes it possible to avoid complicated, years-long treatment with a fixed appliance or tooth extractions in the teenage years entirely.

Proper breathing
and clear speech

Bite defects in children are directly linked to mouth breathing, postural defects and speech problems.

Children's orthodontics

Correcting the dental arches restores the child's natural nasal breathing pattern, which translates into deeper sleep, better oxygenation of the brain and improved concentration at school. Proper tooth alignment gives the tongue the right space, eliminating speech defects (e.g. lisping) and making it easier for the child to communicate freely.

Protection of teeth
from cavities and pain

Crowded teeth in children make thorough cleaning impossible, becoming the main cause of recurring cavities and gum inflammation.

Protection of teeth

Straight teeth mean trouble-free hygiene and a drastic reduction in the risk of painful dental treatment. Early correction also prevents asymmetrical overload of the temporomandibular joints, which in adolescents can cause chronic headaches.

Emotional comfort
and self-confidence

The appearance of a smile has a fundamental influence on a child's acceptance among peers.

Emotional comfort and self-confidence

Children with visible bite defects often withdraw from relationships, cover their mouths when laughing and build lasting insecurities. Starting treatment at this stage protects the child's psyche during the most important period of forming their sense of self-worth.

At Iwanek Clinic our work with the youngest patients and teenagers is based on stress-free communication, turning a visit to the clinic into a positive experience.

Have your child's bite checked at their next visit and give them a healthy smile for life.

Frequently asked questions by our patients

The two professions play completely different roles. It is best to treat them as a team of experts in which each has their own tasks. The dentist is responsible for treating teeth and prepares them for orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist straightens teeth and corrects bite defects.

Pregnancy is not a contraindication to fitting braces. At Iwanek Clinic, orthodontic treatment is carried out with particular care and to high hygiene standards.

An orthodontic consultation is a first visit whose purpose is to assess the alignment of the teeth and the bite and to identify any defects. It usually includes a medical history, an examination of the mouth, a scan of the teeth and a cephalometric X-ray. Based on the collected data, the orthodontist presents a preliminary diagnosis and the possible methods and plan of orthodontic treatment.
