Dental care for the youngest patients

Healthy teeth and positive experiences from the first visit

A child's first encounters with the dentist can shape how they perceive dental treatment for many years to come. That's why at Iwanek Clinic we care not only about healthy teeth, but also about giving our young patients time to get to know the office, the doctor, and everything that happens during a visit.
No rushing, with communication tailored to the child's age. Our main goal is to prevent problems, detect them as early as possible, and treat them only when it's truly necessary.

First steps in the office

A child's first dental visit

It's best when the first visit takes place before pain or the need for treatment appears. The first appointment can be an adaptation visit - the child gets to know the office and the doctor, while the parent receives information on the condition of the teeth, hygiene, diet and further prevention. During the visit we also assess tooth development and eruption, as well as the risk of cavities. For the youngest children, it's worth scheduling the first check-up as soon as the first teeth appear.

Adaptation visit

Not every child is immediately ready for a full examination or treatment - and that's completely natural. An adaptation visit allows the child to get used to the new place and gradually build trust in the doctor. We show the child the chair, the instruments and the individual steps of the examination in a way that's suited to their age. Thanks to this, actual treatment, if needed, can begin in a much calmer atmosphere.

Prevention comes first

The best treatment for a child's teeth is the one that was never needed. That's why prevention plays such a large role in caring for our youngest patients. During visits we check that hygiene is correct, help choose the right toothbrush and toothpaste, discuss dietary habits with parents, and assess each child's individual risk of cavities.

Treating baby teeth

Baby teeth are an important part of a child's healthy development and are worth caring for until they naturally fall out. If cavities appear, we choose the approach based on the child's age, how advanced the change is, and how much time is left before the tooth naturally falls out.
Depending on the situation, treatment may involve protecting a small change, placing a filling, treating the pulp, or - if the tooth can no longer be preserved - extracting it. In every case, we try to choose the solution that's the least burdensome for the young patient.

Protecting new permanent teeth

Erupting permanent teeth need special attention. Their deep grooves can be hard to clean thoroughly, so for some children it's worth protecting them with fissure sealants. Regular check-ups also help detect the first signs of decay at a stage where treatment can be far less extensive.

We care about more than a single tooth

A child's dental visit is also an opportunity to observe the development of the whole chewing system. We pay attention to tooth eruption, space for permanent teeth, and bite development. If we notice a need for further diagnostics, we can refer the child for an orthodontic consultation or dental physiotherapy, both available at Iwanek Clinic - so your child's care can be managed comprehensively in one place.

How to prepare your child for the visit?

Simply tell your child they're going to meet a dentist who will check their teeth.

Avoid detailed descriptions of procedures and words like pain, injection or drilling - even in sentences like "it won't hurt".

Plan the first visit before a sudden problem appears, so your child can get to know the office without the pressure of pain or urgent treatment.

What if my child doesn't want to cooperate?

Not every child is ready for treatment during their first visit. Fear, previous unpleasant experiences, age, or simply a bad day can mean a procedure isn't possible. In that situation, we don't try to finish treatment at all costs - we first assess how urgent the problem is, what the child is able to cope with, and what approaches are available.

Sometimes the best solution is another adaptation visit and gradually building cooperation. In other cases, additional behaviour-guidance techniques may be needed, or referral for treatment under sedation or general anaesthesia. What matters most to us is the child's safety and an approach to treatment that doesn't create another negative experience.

A healthy smile from the earliest years

Regular prevention and positive experiences from the first visits are the best foundation for oral health in the years to come. We want children visiting Iwanek Clinic to see taking care of their teeth as something natural, and a visit to the dentist as just another part of looking after their health. Frequently asked questions from our patients

After the first teeth appear, and no later than around the first birthday. The first visit doesn't have to involve treatment - its purpose is also prevention and parent education. AAPD

The frequency of check-ups should depend on the child's age, the condition of their teeth and their individual risk of cavities. Children at higher risk may need more frequent visits than children without active decay. AAPD

Yes, if their condition requires it. The goal is to maintain the tooth's health and function until it naturally falls out, and to prevent pain and infection.

It's worth starting with an adaptation visit and letting the child gradually get to know the office. The approach to a young patient should be tailored to their age, previous experience and readiness to cooperate. Individualising communication is also in line with current recommendations in pediatric dentistry. AAPD

It involves protecting the deep grooves of a tooth with a suitable material, making it easier to protect areas that are especially prone to developing cavities. Fissure sealants are a cavity-prevention method with proven effectiveness.
